This has never been just about abortion. It is part of a decades long assault by the far-right on basic human rights for women.
According to Pew Research Center study, 6 out of 10 adults in the US believe that abortion should be legal in “all or most cases.” And yet, emboldened by anticipation of this SCOTUS decision, a tidal wave of legislation is being written, and in many cases passed, that aggressively chips away at the rights of just about all marginalized groups in the US.
- A ban on gender affirming care for transgender youth has already taken effect in Alabama.
- Governor Bill Lee of Tennessee signed a law making it a felony to receive abortion pills through the mail.
- State rep Brett Crane said he would consider holding hearings on emergency contraceptives like Plan B.
- Mississippi Gov Tate Reeves refused to rule out banning contraceptives if Roe v Wade is overturned.
- And, in the absence of Roe, 23 states are poised to immediately ban or severely restrict abortion. Some will even outlaw abortion in cases of rape or incest.
At this point, it’s hard to decide what is more ludicrous… the fact that data brokers are selling information on people visiting Planned Parenthood clinics (Vice) or that Justice Alito actually quoted 17th century jurist Sir Matthew Hale, (who condemned women to death as witches and wrote a treatise supporting marital rape) to help justify his position. Or that he claims that banning abortion is actually an aid to protecting Black life.
I could go on and on. The list of potential horrors feels endless. The morning after the news broke, I went to my usual coffee spot, and when the barista asked me how I was, I burst into tears. And tears are justified when it appears that the highest court in the land is relying on a history overflowing with racism, sexism and homophobia to determine our fundamental rights today. Which means that our daughters, sisters, nieces and friends are emerging into a world with fewer rights and considerably less bodily autonomy that we have enjoyed for the past 50 years.
But now is not the time to cry in the corner. It is time to take our rage, fears, joy and hope to the streets. It’s time to rally everyone to make their voices heard, write letters, sign petitions and make sure everyone gets to the ballot box this election season. The vast majority of Americans believe that abortion should be legal. Let’s get that reality set into stone!
The time for action is now. Here’s what we all can do:
HIT THE STREETS!! On Saturday May 14 there are coordinated marches all over the country. Find one in your area or organize your own! Consider wearing green in solidarity with the Green Wave movement in Latin America which has been fighting (and winning!) for abortion rights for decades. Learn more about this powerful movement here and here.
And then head to bansoff.org to find a listing of marches nation wide.
